Judi Dench's tough health update

Judi Dench has admitted that due to her degenerative eye disease she can barely see on a film set and can no longer read her scripts.

The Oscar-winning actress known for her role as M16 head M in seven different James Bond films, told UK publication The Mirror that her age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has gotten so bad that she can now barely see.

“I can’t see on a film set any more,” she told the publication.

“And I can’t see to read. So I can’t see much. It’s difficult for me if I have any length of a part. I haven’t yet found a way.

“But you just deal with it. I have so many friends who will teach me the script,” she added.

The eight-time Academy Award nominee had previously said that she is unable to drive due to her AMD.

“It’s the most terrible shock to the system. Ghastly. It’s terrible to be so dependent on people,” she had previously said.

However, the actress is determined to maintain her independence and has no plans to stop working.

“I have an irrational fear of boredom. That’s why I now have this tattoo that says carpe diem (“seize the day”). That’s what we should live by," she said.

The actress has won various awards throughout extensive career including six BAFTAs, two Golden Globes and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love.

Dench currently lives with her partner David Mills, and has shared how grateful she is to have someone so caring by her side.

“I’ve had many, many good friends, but it’s been very unexpected to have somebody new who is as caring as my partner, David.

“I feel very lucky indeed. And to laugh with somebody is terribly important! Laughing is the most important thing. We laugh about everything,” she said.

Image: Getty

Ellen DeGeneres’ surprise wedding news

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have fallen in love all over again while renewing their vows to each other at home in California.

Ellen, best known for her self-titled talk show, was left speechless when her wife pulled off the surprise of the year - a vow renewal ceremony at her own birthday party.

The couple were married in 2008 at their Beverly Hills home, with a small number of guests in attendance. It was a similar affair this time around, albeit with a few more familiar faces - the likes of Kris Jenner, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle were there to celebrate.

While a full length video was posted to Ellen’s YouTube account, highlights of the day were shared to her Instagram account.

“Portia surprised me at her birthday party by renewing our vows,” she captioned the post, “thank you @KrisJenner for officiating and @BrandiCarlile for performing, and Portia for being the greatest gift to me, even on your birthday.”

The clips featured Portia in a wedding dress (the same one she wore to their 2008 wedding), walking through their friends and family to reach Ellen with a bouquet of white roses.

Portia led Ellen to the front of the room, where they were joined by their friend and reality TV star Kris Jenner.

“Welcome to Portia’s birthday party,” Kris opened, “and to the newest home of one of my favourite couples, two of my BFs, and the record holders for the most homes ever purchased in one city, ever.”

“These two are couple goals, who continue to amaze me with how cute they are together. A match made in heaven. Two peas in a pod,” she went on, “their love and commitment to one another is amazing, and it makes me so happy that they have each other to love and cherish and grow old with."

Kris also took to Ellen’s comment section to share her love for them, writing there that it was the “best day ever!!! What an honour to be there for two of my BFF’s who I adore and who love each other so much!”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Ellen DeGeneres (@ellendegeneres)

Love was certainly the theme of the day, and carried through every word of Portia’s prepared vows for Ellen.

"Surprise," she began, to laughter from their delighted guests. "You don't have to say anything at all, but when I was thinking about what would make my birthday really special, apart from being with family and friends, it was reminding you that you're the most important thing in the world to me in front of family and friends.

“I was thinking about my life, my accomplishments, as you do with a big birthday, and it all just kept leading back to you, and I just thought, 'What greater accomplishment could I ever, ever, ever have in my life than being loved by someone who is so magnificent, by someone as incredible as you?’

“Also I feel like we're on a new journey - this is a new chapter. After 24 houses in 18 years, this is our first home. This is it, and we're settling down, finally, and we're planting roots, and we're taking better care of ourselves and each other than ever before. And I'm just so excited about the future, where we just get to do whatever the hell we want for the rest of our lives.

“On our wedding day in 2008, I quoted Walt Whitman. And I said that it is a great thing to be loved, but it is profound to be understood. And back then, after knowing each other for four years I thought we understood each other, but now 14 years later, I can truly say we understand each other, we accept each other. And how lucky am I to be with somebody who accepts me for exactly who I am, who loves me for exactly who I am?

“It's you. It always has been. You cheer me up when I'm down. You make me feel seen. You make me feel safe, cherished, loved. I love you. I will always, always, love you. I'm so honoured to be your wife."

The wives then shared a kiss to the cheers and celebration of their guests.

“I just adore you," an emotional Ellen finally managed, despite her wife’s assurance that she didn’t have to say anything. "I love you and I would not be on this earth without you. You save me every day. Thank you for saving me every day. I'm the lucky one."

Image: YouTube

Ellen DeGeneres’ frosty response to ex’s car crash

Ellen DeGeneres has commented on ex Anne Heche’s horrifying incident which has landed her in a coma.

The 53-year-old actress was reportedly driving at an extraordinary 140km/h when she crashed her Mini Cooper into a house in Los Angeles.

Her car burst into flames and Anne was pulled out, suffering severe burns and has since ended up in a coma.

Anne’s ex, talk show legend Ellen, was inquired about the incident and asked if she has spoken to her.

“No, I have not. We’re not in touch with each other, so I wouldn’t know,” she responded, news.com.au reported.

Ellen was then asked if she had any well wishes for her former partner to which she just responded with a, “Sure, I don’t want anyone to be hurt”.

The crash is currently being investigated by the LAPD who have confirmed that if Anne is found to have been drunk she would face significant charges.

"If found intoxicated, [Heche] could be charged with misdemeanour DUI hit and run. No arrests have been made so far,” a representative said.

Anne’s representative has confirmed that she is in an “extreme critical condition”.

“She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention,” her representative said.

“She is in a coma and has not regained consciousness since shortly after the accident.”

Anne and Ellen made their relationship public on the red carpet for the movie premiere of Volcanoes back in 1997.

However, Anne was told she would lose her contract if she appeared with Ellen, who was also advised to appear alone.

The pair did not adhere to what they were asked to do and instead showed up on the red carpet but were reportedly kicked out before the movie ended.

Their relationship lasted three-and-a-half years before they broke it off and within hours, Anne was spotted at a stranger's house which saw the police called.

She also had a public breakdown amid the break-up.

Images: Getty

I haven’t been there in a year,” Cox said.

“I had it cleaned. I moved everything off of the right side of the bathroom, so you’d have your space in the drawers. I was just really ready for you.”

Cox revealed she sent her assistant over to the home to make sure DeGeneres had settled nicely, only to hear she done more than that.

“And all of the sudden it was like, ‘Wait a minute. Ellen’s toothbrush is on my side!’ I had her open the drawer and I was like, ‘Well, where’s my makeup?’” Cox recalled.

“So essentially you’re a terrible roommate. You took over my side and your side.”

“That was Portia who took over your side,” DeGeneres joked in defence.

“I only have one side. She happened to be there one night.”

Ellen DeGeneres could be replaced

Rumours are rife that a frontrunner has already emerged to replace Ellen DeGeneres - despite the star not yet confirming is she’s saying goodbye to her TV hosting gig.

According to reports by The Sun, host of the Late Late Show James Corden is “in line” to replace DeGeneres, and “could be the shock winner after dozens of employees accused the $50 million-a-year presenter of turning a blind eye to racism, bullying and sexual harassment on her hit daytime show”.

The publication revealed insiders claim Corden has been seen as DeGeneres’ “long-term successor” even before the recent allegations came to light.

It follows reports over the weekend that the 62-year-old is soon to call quits on her hugely successful show, due to negative publicity and workplace allegations.

According to the Daily Mail, the host has told executives at TelePictures and Warner Bros that she’s had enough and wants to walk away.

“She feels she can’t go on and the only way to recover her personal brand from this is to shut down the show,” a source told the publication.

“The truth is she knew what was going on, it’s her show. The buck stops with her. She can blame every executive under the sun – but Ellen is ultimately the one to blame.”

Staff was also left unimpressed by the apology letter she had sent out last week, saying she’s a “phony” and claiming anyone who complained to her about ongoing issues “would’ve been fired”.

“Don’t think for a minute anything she has said in that apology means anything. She created and then enabled this toxic culture to go on for so long,” one staffer said.

“If anyone had come to her or those three (executive producers) to complain, they would’ve been fired.”

“Inside Telepictures we’ve had enough of her. She is a phony who does not practice what she preaches,” another source told Daily Mail.

“The behaviour of her show executives has been appalling, but (Ellen) is no better. In fact, she is the worst. It’s outrageous that she is trying to pretend that this is all a shock to her. The fish rots from the head, and Ellen is the head.”

The insider went on to claim that DeGeneres “hates coming to work”, “struggles to be nice to people” and has “utter contempt for her audience”.

“She has been phoning it in for so long, and only staying for the money and celebrity it affords her,” the source said.

“We’ve dealt with her BS for so many years, she’s not innocent at all, she’s not nice and the show is not filled with happiness.”

Ellen DeGeneres pens open letter to staff

Ellen DeGeneres has penned a letter to the staff of her talk show in the wake of allegations of a toxic workplace culture.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the note to crew is part of an effort to change the culture behind the scenes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which will reportedly also see one of the show’s producers ousted.

In her apology note published by THR, DeGeneres insisted that steps will be taken to “correct the issues” going forward.

“As we’ve grown exponentially, I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done. Clearly some didn’t. That will now change and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again,” she writes.

DeGeneres opens the letter with an apology, saying that what has happened was “the opposite” of what she intended for the show.

“Hey everybody – it’s Ellen. On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness – no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry. Anyone who knows me knows it’s the opposite of what I believe and what I hoped for our show,” she writes.

Elsewhere in the letter, DeGeneres says she’s “learning that people who work with me and for me are speaking on my behalf and misrepresenting who I am and that has to stop”.

The talk show host said if it wasn’t for the pandemic, she would have “done this in person”, and said she was “so sorry” to those who did not have a good experience working on the show.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show is reportedly under investigation after numerous accusations by former staffers that it is a “toxic” work environment.

The celebs banned from appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show

A number of celebrities are probably thankful that they’ve been banned from appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show.

The comedian’s reputation has taken a huge hit this year due to multiple accusations from staffers and show guests claiming she’s “not nice”.

“Ellen is at the end of her rope,” an insider told Us Weekly. “She thought this was all just sour grapes from a few haters. But it’s not a passing thing — the hits just keep coming.”

But while some stars may now reject an invite to appear on the show, others won’t get that opportunity as they’ve been black-listed by the host herself.

Caitlyn Jenner

DeGeneres allegedly banned Caitlyn Jenner, 69, from her show in 2017 after she released her tell-all memoir, The Secrets of My Life, in which she claimed DeGeneres “alienated” her from the LGBTQ community after coming on the show two years prior and saying she hadn’t accepted gay marriage.

“I have to admit that I remember 15 years ago, 20 years ago, whenever it was that the whole gay marriage issue came up, I was not for it,” Jenner explained in 2015.

“I am a traditionalist. I mean, I’m older than most people in the audience. I like tradition and it’s always been between a man and a woman and I’m thinking I don’t quite get it.”

Later on, she said she accepted gay marriage and that it was a “wonderful thing to see”.

Vince Vaughn

The 49-year-old was reportedly banned after his 2011 comedy The Dilemma showed Vaughn’s character saying: “Electric cars are gay. I mean, not homosexual, but my-parents-are-chaperoning-the-dance gay.”

Later on, Anderson Cooper came on the show and expressed how disappointed he was with the quip.

The two eventually made amends and Vaughn appeared on her talk show a few years later.

However, a source said that Vaughn and DeGeneres “love each other” and that he stopped appearing because he had nothing to promote.

Kathy Griffin

The Finding Nemo star wouldn’t allow Kathy Griffin to appear on her show given their longstanding feud, which according to Griffin, began when DeGeneres opened her show with a monologue about how “mean” Griffin could be.

“Ellen did a monologue about how mean I am,” Griffin told Us Weekly. “I was in the dressing room like, ‘S**t! You’re another woman comic, c’mon!’”

Griffin later revealed she was banned from DeGeneres’ show. Later, the talk show host slammed her to W Magazine: “I know she had a big thing about wanting to be on the show, and we didn’t book her,” she said. “She did a whole thing that I banned her from the show. I didn’t ban her from the show, because first you have to be on the show to be banned.”

Kim Burrell

The gospel singer was set to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show alongside Pharrell to promote their song from Hidden Figures, but DeGeneres banned her from making an appearance after she made homophobic comments.

“I actually didn’t know her, her name is Kim Burrell. She made a statement she was doing a Facebook Live and she said some very not nice things about homosexuals, so I didn’t feel that was good of me to have her on the show to give her a platform after she was saying things about me,” DeGeneres explained on her show before letting Pharrell discuss Burrell.

While Pharrell disagreed with the comments Burrell made, he insisted that people should “love each other” despite differing views.

“I love her, just like I love everybody else and we all got to get used to that,” he said. “We all have to get used to everyone’s differences and understand that this is a big, gigantic, beautiful, colourful world and it only works with inclusion and empathy. It only works that way.”

He added that “sometimes the divisive stuff works in life. We learned that lesson last year that sometimes divisiveness works. But you have to choose what side you’re on. I’m choosing empathy. I’m choosing inclusion. I’m choosing love for everybody just trying to lift everyone. Even when I disagree with someone, I’m wishing them the best and hoping for the best because we can’t win the other way.”

Sherri Shepherd

Sherri Shepherd used to be an Ellen show regular, after appearing on the first season of the show a number of times.

It stopped when she began making comments on The View that were perceived as anti-gay, an insider told Page Six.

“When Sherri was on The View, she used to get booked on the Ellen show all the time. After she came out on The View taking a stance against gay marriage, the Ellen show refused to book Sherri,” our insider said. “They never gave a reason but the writing was on the wall.

“Ellen is obviously a hypocrite,” the source explained. “She said she can be friends with people who have different views from hers, yet she won’t give those people her platform and block them from appearing on her show.”

Shepherd has made multiple comments that were considered homophobic, including in one in 2014 when she said growing up Christian led her to believe homosexuality was a sin.

“I think people don’t know my heart,” she told Menendez. “I think people feel I’m very judgmental. I think people feel I’m very homophobic. If they knew me, and knew my heart … “You grow up being a Christian and you grow up believing homosexuality is a sin; you’re going to hell if you’re a homosexual. This is something that they teach in churches. So it’s something that I grew up believing.

“I might not agree with your lifestyle, but I love you,” she continued. “You may not agree with my lifestyle, but you love me … I don’t say it’s a choice. If you tell me, ‘Sherri, I was born gay.’ Okay. I’m not gonna argue with you, because I can’t tell you how you feel and what’s going on inside. I’m trying to make it into heaven by the skin of my teeth … I don’t know who I’m gonna see.”

She later apologised and claimed her comments were misinterpreted by the media.

She told The New York Post in 2019: “I’ve always admired and respected Ellen. She was the first to book me for my first talk show, where I went on to hold a record 23 appearances; and she championed for me to be a co-host on The View in 2007. The views and thoughts that I held have evolved from the statements I made on The View over 10 years ago and I support same sex marriage and partnerships. I am unsure why I haven’t been booked on Ellen’s show since my tenure on The View, but I welcome the opportunity to reconnect with Ellen to thank her for her support and opportunities that have happened for me because of her.”

Is this the downfall of Ellen DeGeneres?

Ellen deGeneres has been a TV icon and well-respected celebrity for more than two decades, but has copped a good deal of backlash after making a “distasteful” quarantine joke that left a sour taste in people’s mouths.

Hosting her hit program The Ellen Show from the comfort of her gorgeous living room, surrounded by natural light and luxurious greenery, the celebrity worth a whopping US$490 million made a joke about having to film from her home while quarantining with her wife Portia de Rossi by comparing the whole situation to being incarcerated.

“This is like being in jail is what it is,” DeGeneres joked. “Mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay!”

Several loving fans took to Twitter to criticise the comedian for not recognising just how privileged she seems to be.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Ellen DeGeneres (@theellenshow) on Apr 4, 2020 at 1:33pm PDT

“My 19-year-old daughter is considered an ‘essential employee’. She's a fast food worker. She's exposed EVERY DAY. No one GAF about Ellen's privilege pampers a$$ stuck in her mansion. Show me @ellen working the lines @ the grocery store. NO mask, NO gloves. Then I might care,” one angry user wrote.

Another person joked: “Petition to stick her in an actual jail after quarantine is lifted. Just for a month or so, so maybe she can learn something.”

“Hey, Ellen, go volunteer at a grocery store or food bank. Get on the front lines if being sequestered in your mansion is just too difficult. Unbelievable,” another added.
